What this tool does NOT check
- That the account actually exists. An IBAN can be perfectly written and match no open account.
- That the holder is who you think. Your payment provider checks that when executing the transfer.
- That the bank accepts SEPA instant transfers.
Why this works offline
An IBAN carries two check digits calculated from the rest of the number using a public algorithm (ISO 13616 and ISO 7064). If someone mistypes a digit, the calculation stops adding up. So you do not need to ask any bank to spot a typo: you just redo the maths.
What next
If the IBAN belongs to someone else and you are about to send money, also check the name matches the account holder exactly. It is the number one cause of held payments.
